Picture of a MaK marine engine

MaK (Maschinenbau Kiel) began life in the aftermath of World War II - formed from the remnants of German manufacturing company Deutschewerke - a producer of locomotives, ships (including u-boats), and armed vehicles which was largely destroyed by allied forces.

Remaining in Kiel, northern Germany, MAK, as it was initially known, re-commenced manufacturing in 1948, focusing on the same three disciplines as its predecessor.

The lower case 'a' in the shortened version of the company name came about in 1954 after a lengthy wrangle with MAN, one of its main competitors.

The company was re-named Maschinenbau Kiel GmbH in 1958 after being bought out by Bremer Atlas GmbH (GmbH represents a type of limited liability company in Germany), although the MaK label was retained.

In 1997, with the two other divisions having been sold off earlier in the decade, the marine engines part of the company was bought by Caterpillar Inc., although the brand-identity, Kiel based production facility and impeccable standards of manufacturing remain in place.

Britannia Marine is able to supply a new, re-conditioned and OEM MaK marine engines and spares parts as well as engineers capable of dealing with wide range of Mak marine engine issues.
